Position Summary
The School Security Team Lead & Emergency Management Coordinator is responsible for overseeing daily school security operations, leading the security team, and ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors. This position assigns security personnel to designated areas, monitors their performance, enforces safety expectations, and reports concerns to school administration. In addition to team leadership duties, the position fulfills all standard school security responsibilities.
The coordinator also leads emergency management planning for the school. This includes reviewing emergency protocols, training staff, conducting assessments and drills, and responding to emergencies in collaboration with administration.
Key Responsibilities
Security Team Leadership
- Assign daily duty locations and responsibilities to school security staff.
- Provide direction, guidance, and mentorship to security personnel.
- Monitor staff performance and attendance throughout the school day.
- Ensure all security team members follow school policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Document and report incidents, concerns, or staff performance issues to school administration.
- Support security team members in managing student behaviour, conflict resolution, and risk mitigation.
School Security Duties
- Maintain a visible presence throughout the school to promote safety and positive behaviour.
- Monitor hallways, entrances, exits, common areas, and school grounds.
- De-escalate conflicts and intervene in safety-related incidents following school protocols.
- Build positive relationships with students to promote a safe, welcoming environment.
- Complete incident reports and support investigations as needed.
- Assist with visitor management, door security, and supervision during high-traffic times (arrival, lunch, dismissal).
Emergency Management Coordination
- Serve as the school’s Emergency Management Coordinator in collaboration with School Administration
- Review, update, and implement school emergency protocols and procedures in collaboration with school administration
- Conduct emergency risk assessments and identify areas needing improvement.
- Lead planning and coordination of fire drills, lockdowns, shelter-in-place drills, evacuations, and other required procedures.
- Provide training and support to staff on emergency roles and responsibilities.
- Work closely with administration and external agencies (e.g., local first responders) to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Act as a lead responder during emergencies, supporting crisis management and communication.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with school administration regarding safety issues, concerns, and emerging risks.
- Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and student services to maintain a safe school culture.
- Participate in safety meetings, planning sessions, and professional development opportunities.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience in school security, safety operations, emergency response, or related field.
- Strong leadership skills with experience supervising or coordinating staff.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and authoritative in high-stress situations.
- Training in emergency response, crisis intervention, or similar areas (or willingness to obtain).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with children and youth in a school environment.
- Strong documentation, organizational, and reporting abilities.
Documentation & Record-Keeping
- Maintain accurate records of: Visitor logs, student sign in/out, incident reports, drill schedules and outcomes, facility safety checks
- Liaison with NNCEA maintenance to regarding safety concerns
- Provide bi-weekly reports to administration as requested
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong communication and de-escalation skills
- Ability to work effectively with youth, especially in a First Nations educational environment
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, and Indigenous values
- Ability to remain calm and act quickly during emergencies
- Familiarity within EMO procedures and safety protocols
Working Conditions
- Works primarily within school buildings and on school grounds.
- Must be available during school hours and for emergency situations as required.
- May be required to lift, move, or respond quickly during incidents.
Qualifications:
Training and or experience in the field
Class 5 license is an asset
Valid CPR/First aid, or willingness to enrol in training
Clear child abuse and criminal record check
Wage: Negotiable
Benefits and pension provided after probation period
Salaried position 1 consecutive year of employment unless otherwise negotiated
