The NNOC cultural support worker assists with providing culturally relevant teachings to students and staff for grades 7-12. This position consists of classroom visits to share teachings, information about the culture and traditional ways, assisting with mediations, conducting small group lessons regarding the culture, and more.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assists students to stay connected to the culture, language, and traditions
- Supports participation in cultural events, feasts, ceremonies
- Provides emotional and cultural safety to students
- Offers one on one, small group, or classroom check ins and seminars with a culturally grounded lens
- Implements cultural teachings within classrooms
- Assists with mediations as a cultural representative
- Supports restorative approaches through a cultural lens
- Assist students to navigate challenges, transitions, and other barriers through the culture
- Liaisons between school, families, students, and staff
- Assists staff with understanding community context, history, and culturally relevant concepts
- Liaisons with school attendance officer to provide culturally grounded supports for students/home visits
- Liaison with Student Support Team to provide guidance and cultural recommendations for students
- Liaison with elders in the schools
- Liaison with NNCEA land based coordinator and language coordinator
- Liaison with NNOC Guidance Counsellor and Social worker for planning purposes
- Provide guidance to Administration as requested from a culturally infused perspective
- Other direction as assigned by School Administration
Qualifications:
- Education of experience related to counselling
- Extensive knowledge of the culture, land, and traditions
Salary: Negotiable based on experience
